Name of the Lab: Basic Workshop Lab

  • All engineers must have a basic knowledge of repair and maintenance activities to address issues which they encounter in day to day life. Hence first year students of all engineering branches are made to undergo a course in workshop practice lab.
  • The basic workshop practice helps students to understand the basic skills required for fitting, welding and sheet metal jobs.
  • Students demonstrate the use of workshop skills by creating jobs of given constrains.

Name of the Lab: Computer Aided Engineering/Machine Drawing Lab

  • Drawing, being the communicating language of engineers, is taught in the Computer Aided Engineering Drawing Lab using VTU specified software tools (Solid Edge V-20)
  • Here fundamental knowledge is given to the students regarding how to draw engineering objects.
  • Students learn and master those concepts by practicing a large number of problems during the lab hours

Name of the Lab: Material Testing Lab

  • Material testing lab gives a broad understanding of common materials related to mechanical engineering with an emphasis on the fundamentals of structure-property-application relationships.
  • Testing the material for its mechanical strength forms an integral part of manufacturing.
  • In this lab, the students are exposed to the testing of engineering materials with a variety of testing machines like UTM, Hardness testers, etc.

Name of the Lab: Foundry and Forging Lab

  • The fundamental steps in the manufacturing practices of casting and forging are studied here.
  • Students practice preparation of sand moulds and various forging operation to produce desired shapes in the lab.
  • The laboratory also has various sand testing equipment.

Name of the Lab: Mechanical Measurements and Metrology Lab

  • Metrology is the science of measurement and includes all theoretical and practical aspects of measurement.
  • This lab provides the students an active learning environment for the measurement technologies used in production engineering field.
  • Various equipments in the lab include LVDT, Load Cell,Ttransducer, Micrometer, Thermocouple, Gauges, Profile projector and Dynamometers.

Name of the Lab: Machine Shop

  • This laboratory provides an introduction to the know-how of common processes used in industries for manufacturing parts by removal of material in a controlled manner.
  • The laboratory is equipped with measuring tools, lathes, drilling machines and milling machines.
  • Upon completion of the lab, students will be able to perform the basic machining operations.

Name of the Lab: Fluid Mechanics and Machines Lab

  • The course will introduce fluid mechanics and establish its relevance in Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering.
  • The fundamental principles underlying the subject are demonstrated using simple hydraulic experiments.
  • The performance of hydraulic machines are also studied in the laboratory.

Name of the Lab: Energy Conversion Engineering Lab

  • The Lab focuses on technologies for efficient energy conversion and utilization.
  • Basic concepts of fuels, heat engines and lubricating oils are experimentally studied in the lab.
  • The lb contains different types I.C. engines with suitable testing arrangements.

Name of the Lab: Heat and Mass Transfer Lab

  • Students study the phenomenon of heat transfer and conduct experiments on various modes of heat transfer.
  • Various heat transfer mechanisms and their applications are studied in the laboratory.

Name of the Lab: Computer aided Modeling and analysis lab

  • FEM packages include specific components such as thermal, electromagnetic, fluid, and structural working environments.
  • In this lab, MSC NASTRAN FEA package is used to solve wide variety of engineering problems.
  • 1-D/2-D structural analysis and thermal analysis involving various load and boundary conditions are analyzed using the above package.

Name of the Lab: Design lab

  • In this lab, the principles learnt in Mechanical Engineering courses such as Strength of Materials, Design of machine elements and Mechanical Vibrations are verified and validated.
  • The laboratory provides an advanced, open-ended learning environment.
  • Student will undergo experienced learning and knowledge sharing activities during conduction of experiments.

Name of the Lab: CIM Lab

  • Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) Laboratory provides students with many challenging hands-on experiences in the automation field.
  • Students are given with an exposure to write part programs for different machining processes like milling, drilling and turning.

Girish Kumar had his basic education at Mangaluru. He completed his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (with Automobile specialization) at Karnataka Polytechnic, Mangaluru. He obtained his graduation (AMIE) in Mechanical Engineering from The Institution of Engineers (India), Kolkata. He had his M. Tech. (in Materials Engineering) and Ph. D. (in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering) at prestigious National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal. He has 18 years of teaching experience (at Engineering and Diploma levels) and 4 years of Research experience. His research interests include lead-free solders, corrosion, Al-Si alloy behaviour, biodegradable polymer composites, solar thermal applications and compressed earth blocks. He had 15 journal publications and 23 conference presentations to his credit.

Prof. Sridhara T., is working as an Assistant Professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering since July 2010 at SDMIT, Ujire. He worked as lecturer in the departments of Mechanical and Computer Science from December 2006 to February 2010 at SJMIT, Chitradurga. He has got 10 years of teaching experience. Currently he is pursuing his Ph. D., in research under VTU in the area of advanced materials. He is an active resource person for seminar, workshop, training programs in the area of Advanced Materials and Automation. He is enthusiastic working towards different responsibilities like chairman, coordinator, member, organizer in the college.
